Overview
The Green Grotto Caves are a labyrinth of limestone caves located in Falmouth, between the resort towns of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. Once used as shelter by the native Arawak Indians, the caves have since been employed as a hiding place for smugglers and runaway enslaved people, before serving as the site of a nightclub. Now, they’re a Jamaican attraction you can tour in the company of a local guide.
This family-friendly adventure is designed to offer more than just a tour—it’s an opportunity to create lasting memories. With expert guides leading the way, you’ll not only learn about the caves’ intriguing history but also enjoy a peaceful retreat into nature.
History
During the 17th century, when the English invaded Jamaica, the Green Grotto Caves served as a hideout for the Spaniards who were being driven from the island. In the mid-20th century, between the two world wars, the caves were used by smugglers running arms to Cuba. During World War II, the Jamaican government utilized the entrance of the cave as a storeroom for barrels of rum. Over time, the Green Grotto Caves have been known by various names, including Runaway Bay Caves, Cave Hall Caves, Discovery Bay Caves, Dry Harbour Caves, Hopewell Caves, Rum Caves, and Dairy Caves. Today, they stand as one of Jamaica’s most prominent natural attractions.
